Point & Shoot Cameras

Leica has just announced a new member of their versatile and quality-driven line of compact point-and-shoot digital cameras, the X Vario (Typ 107). This model is poised to perch between the X2 point-and-shoot and the M full-frame rangefinder digital camera, and it brings with it a large APS-C-sized image sensor and an apt 28-70mm Leica zoom lens.

Sony has announced a new long zoom, high-performance point-and-shoot camera: the Cyber-shot HX50V Digital Camera. With a 20.4MP BSI Exmor R CMOS sensor and the BIONZ Image Processor, sharp imagery, low-light sensitivity, quick performance, and fast autofocus speeds are part and parcel.

The Sigma DP3 Merrill is a point-and-shoot camera with a 46MP, APS-C-sized sensor. About 15 megapixels are assigned to each of the primary imaging colors: red, green and blue. Renowned for their lenses, Sigma includes a fixed focal length 50mm f/2.8 lens with this DP3 Merrill.

If you’re in the market for a new point-and-shoot camera this spring, you may be especially impressed with Canon’s recently introduced 2013 lineup. Ricoh has announced the release of their high-performance GR Digital Camera. Improving on the successes of their GR DIGITAL (I-IV) series, but eliminating the numbered nomenclature, the simply named GR is a formidable point-and-shoot, conceived and designed to compete with the Nikon COOLPIX A, Canon PowerShot G1X and Fujifilm X100s, for example.

The Nikon Coolpix A has an APS-C-size 16.2 megapixel sensor, making it Nikon's largest-sized sensor in a point-and-shoot body. The fixed lens has a 35mm equivalent focal length of 28mm, and its maximum aperture is relatively fast at f/2.8.

To my astonishment and delight, a truly innovative digital device recently hit the consumer market, and it did so about as quietly as a snowflake landing on cotton. No show-stopping CES announcement. No TV spot during the Super Bowl.

Canon has just announced two new Rebel DSLRs, the EOS Rebel T5i and the EOS Rebel SL1, both of which are poised to be compact DSLRs that will deliver impressive imaging performance. Additionally, a new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens has been announced.

The compact camera market is broad, and Olympus holds its own as one of the top manufacturers of quality point-and-shoot devices. Their 2013 lineup offers perfect solutions for a range of both traditional and unique applications.

Nikon has announced not only a new version of its wonderful 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 lens, but three new point-and-shoot cameras, including the new flagship COOLPIX A digital camera with a large DX-format sensor.

The Pentax MX-1 is a vintage style, though fully modern, point-and-shoot camera with a 12MP sensor that's relatively large  at 1/1.7". Its built-in lens zooms across a 35mm equivalent focal-length range of 28-112mm. Kelby Media's Larry Becker finds a lot to like about the MX-1 in this hands-on review.
