Lumix DMC-G3: Panasonic's Smallest, Lightest Micro Four Thirds Camera Yet

Panasonic has introduced its first gen-3 “G”-series camera: the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G3. Like its predecessors, the Lumix DMC-G3 is a Micro Four Thirds format (MFT), mirrorless, interchangeable-lens camera, albeit with a higher-resolution, 16.0MP Live MOS imaging sensor for capturing stills (JPEG and RAW) and full HD 1080p AVCHD video with stereo sound.

Though touted for its DSLR-like shooting and handling characteristics, the engineers at Panasonic designed several AF, exposure and editing control features into the G3’s 1,440,000-dot, 3.0” Free Angle Touch Enabled LCD. Included among these enhancements are touch follow-focus control with near-pixel accuracy, enhanced window-within-a-window 4x-plus manual focus viewing and the ability to quickly flip through captured images like pages in a book. Exposure and White Balance can also be adjusted, slider style, using the camera’s LCD.  And to make composing images at awkward angles that much easier, the camera’s LCD can be rotated 180° and tilted 270°.

In addition to these cutting-edge technologies, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G3 also falls back on more familiar control functions including an analog control dial for setting exposure and Custom modes (Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Manual, Custom 1, Custom 2, Creative modes and Scene modes), as well as a one-touch video button for quick shifting between stills and video capture and a separate button for Intelligent Auto mode (iA). Dual stereo mics and a hot shoe ride atop the G3’s pop-up flash housing and the rear camera controls should appear as familiar and decipherable to anyone who’s ever used a digital camera.

Panasonic advertises its Lumix DMC-G-series cameras as being “the company’s smallest and lightest digital interchangeable-lens camera with a viewfinder to date,” and the 1,440,000-dot electronic viewfinder (EVF) built into the Lumix G3 equals  the resolving power of the camera’s rear-mounted LCD, both of which allow for 100% viewing of the total image area.

Other features found on the Panasonic Lumix G3 include 4-frame-per-second stills at full res (up to 20 frames per second at 4MP), reduced signal-to-noise ratios (it’s less noisy at higher ISO ratings), selective noise reduction, which improves overall image quality as opposed to global noise reduction, 23 AF focus points, LightSpeed AF for quicker AF response times, MEGA O.I’S (built-in optical image stabilization) and an improved Dust Reduction System.

In addition to a 14-42mm kit lens (28-84mm equivalent), the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G3 accepts 11 other fixed and zoom Micro Four Third optics from Panasonic. You also have the option of using Micro Four Third optics from other manufacturers as well as standard optics from other camera and lens manufacturers via the use of lens adapter rings (optional).

The Panasonic Lumix GMC G3 is available in black for formal occasions and white, red and brown for casual occasions. Delivery of the new DMC-G3 cameras is expected in June, 2011.

I originally purchased a G1 then I got a G2 and I use them for Professional work in my studio and the A3+  size enlargements for clients are faultless, the only issue is their Raw handling software and it takes a bit of practice to get white balance spot on. If G3 has better options I might be buying a third body and do away with my APS size gear.

So it's June 25 and all shipping info on the G3's indicate that it "ships in June"... any update on that?

Hello,

I am very sorry. We've updated our site and at this time we have no expected delivery date from Panasonic. We of course will post any delivery information we know ASAP.

Given the same lens in both cameras, is the G3 an upgrade to the GH2, or should we expect to see a GH3 in the future (i,e, - what are the target markets for the different cameras ?)

Hello,

The big difference between the 2 cameras is the video capabilities. The GH2 is the superior choice for videographers due to the [Full HD] 1,920 x 1,080, 24p Video Resolutio. Due to it's popularity, I could see a GH3, but this is only my speculation. The G3 is aimed at the Point and Shoot customer looking to move up to camea that offer more pro like featurers like interchangeable lens but not wanting to use or carry a full size DSLR.  The G3 is one of the smallest interchangeable lens camera to feature an electronic viewfinder.

I"ve been waiting months for you to get the GH2 in stock but maybe i'll just wait for the GH3 to come out. Any idea when the GH3 might be avaiable and also the new AC 130 video camera ?

Thanks Nitro Mike

Thanks for your interest in B&H InDepth and this comment. Unfortunately we do not have information on availability we consider reliable enough to publish. We appreciate this can be frustrating and we are as eager as you to have both the digital and video cameras available as soon as circumstances permit. In the meantime, for any product on our site that's not in stock, you can use our "Notify Me" applet. The sooner you register for this notification, the closer to the top of the queue you will be.

Allan, reviewers are saying that the high-iso performance of the G3 is significantly improved compared to previous G-series cameras. Do you have any idea when Panasonic plans to bring this level of noise control to the GF line?

I unfortunately do not have the inside scoop as per what's going in Panasonic's R&D department, so my guess is as good as yours. What I would venture to say is that they are working feverishly to continuously improve their unique product line, and like all things digital, these issues too shall pass.

  Hang in there Alansky!

Will you offer a kit with the 20mm f1.7 or 14-140mm lenses?  I am not interested in the kit lens 14-42mm.

Thanks.

Hi Ivan,

Hate to be the one to break the news to you but unfortunately the only camera/lens kit offered by Panasonic is the 14-42mm zoom.

The good news is that you can buy the body separately along with whatever compatible lens floats your boat.

I got excited for a second, but in fact LCD on G3 is just 460K-dot  :(

Now if only Panasonic could actually release the GH2...

Panasonic actually released the GH2 a while ago, but unfortunately the demand has exceeded the supply of cameras. As a result we've been backordered on this item.

When can we expect to see a drop in price on the G2 now that the G3 has been announced?

Thank you for your question.  The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2 is currently listed for $999.95 with free shipping. We do not anticipate a price drop in the foreseeable future.   Please check http://bhpho.to/ihqEon regularly for availability, up to date pricing and special offers.

It was actually the 'G2' not the 'GH2' that I was questioning.  I thought perhaps since it has a successor now that the price of the 'G2' may be reduced.  I'm wanting to buy one to have it converted to a dedicated Infrared camera.  Any thoughts?  I have the GH2 as main camera already.

Hi Linda, Sorry for the confusion.  As with the Panasonic GH2, We do not anticipate a price drop in the foreseeable future for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G2   Please check http://bhpho.to/kEy0tB regularly for availability, up to date pricing and special offers.  I hope this clears things up for you!
