Introduced as “a new visual experience,” Nikon has just announced the NIKKOR Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena lens for its mirrorless Z system. This short-telephoto prime is all about being the quintessential portrait lens; it emphasizes accurate rendering, smooth bokeh, and high sharpness, along with a focal length that flatters subjects and allows for an ideal amount of subject-background separation.

It’s going to be hard to follow up a week of Bild Expo and then IBC, but we can try with a few key announcements. Nikon took a very, very good shot at it with the release of the Zf, a retro-styled full-frame camera that takes the classic looks of the FM2 and combines them with modern imaging tech from the current Z Series mirrorless lineup. Nikon also released a teaser for the mysterious “Plena,” although we will have to wait until next week

Nikon married the old and the new this week with the announcement of an addition to the Z-series lineup, the Nikon Zf. The Zf has a retro-inspired look reminiscent of the Nikon FM2 but with all the modern convenience of the Z6 II, and then some. Like good acting—and skilled retouching—masterful lighting is an accomplished skill that should remain mostly unseen. This is the takeaway from our conversations with two great lighting whisperers, Canon technical advisor Eric Stoner and Nikon Ambassador Joe McNally. We sat down with both of these experts earlier this year at B&H's 2023 Depth of Field Conference. Above photograph © Joe McNally Our first guest is Eric Stoner, a Canon

When it comes to bird and wildlife photography, the one word you need to know is: telephoto! If you've ever tried to approach birds or wild animals (not too close, please!) you've likely noticed they usually don't take kindly to humans and fly or scamper off before you get close enough for a photograph. The magic of the telephoto lens allows you to get "up close" without getting… up close. For birding and wildlife, getting closer usually means using lenses with a minimum 300mm focal length. We've all seen spectacular wildlife images by top

Except for the announcement of a few lenses this week, there isn't much news to share. Nikon continues to expand its Z-mount lineup with the addition of a pair of telephoto zooms: the NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR and NIKKOR Z 70-180mm f/2.8. Cinema folks also get a pair of zooms from Laowa: the full-frame

Nikon has announced two expansive zooms for Z series cameras: the NIKKOR Z 70-180mm f/2.8 and 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR. The 70-180mm f/2.8 brings the benefits of a fast, constant aperture to a compact and relatively lightweight form. The 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR becomes the farthest-reaching zoom for Z series cameras to date. Together they form a telephoto kit with massive coverage from portraits to events, wildlife, sports, and more.

Humans and pets have shared a deep bond for centuries, yet our animal companions are now considered more a part of the family than ever. So, it’s no surprise that pet photography is a blossoming niche, and a perfect subject for this week’s podcast—especially since it’s National Pet Month!
